A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. His real 1972 student card is taped into the film, and his face at twenty in every illustration is drawn from its photo. The letter to Father writes itself on the canvas with the words he actually promised. The sound effects are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

Illustrations are an artistic re-imagining, not historical photographs. Names, dates and events come only from his memoir. The student card is real; the young man is drawn from its photo. Ba is drawn from his photos; classmates, the tea farmer and the Russian doctor and attendant are imagined from the text. The letter’s promise is quoted from the memoir; the rest of the handwriting is decoration.
