A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. Every frame is drawn live on a canvas from paper cut-outs and painted backdrops, with the real portraits of ông bà ngoại taped into the film. The sound effects, from the flooded river to a night-time bird hunt, are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

This chapter recounts a massacre the narrator witnessed at fourteen. The film does not depict the killings; it shows only the shelter, the smoke and the mourning. Bà ngoại is drawn from her real portrait and the boy from the narrator’s earlier sheets; Năm and dì Út are imagined from the text.
